Morales Arrest Warrant Sparks Political Criticism in Bolivia
(MENAFN) According to reports, Bolivia has issued an arrest warrant for former President Evo Morales after a court moved to declare him in contempt, triggering a sharp escalation in political tensions across the country. His supporters have warned of major unrest and said they would resist any attempt to detain him.
The legal case, which involves accusations of aggravated human trafficking and statutory rape, has been placed on indefinite suspension. The public prosecutor’s office stated that the proceedings will not continue unless Morales either appears in court or is arrested by authorities.
Morales, who led Bolivia between 2006 and 2019, has been staying in the Chapare region since October 2024. The area, known for coca production, is considered his main political and labor support base. Reports indicate that thousands of farmers and supporters are currently stationed around the area to block any potential police operation.
A prominent coca growers’ leader, Dieter Mendoza, said in remarks carried by Kawsachun Coca radio that any attempt to detain the former president would trigger a nationwide reaction.
“They think that by arresting Evo Morales, they will succeed in quelling and demobilizing the movement. They are very much mistaken,” he said. He also warned that, “If they touch Evo Morales, this will cause an upheaval ... there will be an insurgency across Bolivia.” He further called on people in the Cochabamba Tropics to stay on “high alert” and be “ready for battle.”
Prosecutors allege that during his presidency, Morales was involved in a relationship with a 15-year-old girl that resulted in the birth of a child. Case documents reportedly claim that the girl’s parents consented to the relationship in exchange for benefits.
