Rights Group Says Gaza Doctors Face Catastrophic Conditions in Israeli Jail

(MENAFN) Four Palestinian doctors from the Gaza Strip detained in Israeli prisons are reportedly experiencing starvation and extremely harsh conditions described as “catastrophic,” according to an Israeli human rights organization.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Physicians for Human Rights Israel said one of its lawyers visited the detainees at the Negev Prison in southern Israel on May 11.

The group identified the detainees as Dr. Mohammed Obeid, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Dr. Murad al-Qouqa, and Dr. Akram Abu Ouda. It said they have been held for extended periods without formal charges.

According to the organization, the doctors reported that conditions inside the prison remain unchanged, particularly in relation to the quality and quantity of food, which they described as “dangerously insufficient.”

The detainees also said that scabies has spread among prisoners, while medical treatment remains inadequate and responses to illness are limited or delayed.

The rights group further stated that the four doctors have appeared before Israeli courts several times in recent months, with their detention repeatedly extended without charges or full legal representation.

The detainees reportedly characterized their situation as “catastrophic from both humanitarian and health perspectives,” according to the statement.
