Trump Weighs Expanded ‘Project Freedom’ Operation in Hormuz
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he is weighing the revival of “Project Freedom,” while suggesting that securing maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz would form only part of a broader military campaign.
In remarks to a news agency, Trump indicated that Iran’s leadership would eventually yield under pressure.
“They're going to fold,” he said.
When asked about the possibility of engaging with the current Iranian authorities, he responded that he remains open to negotiations as long as discussions continue toward an agreement.
“I will deal with them until they make a deal.”
Trump also alleged that Iranian officials had told him Tehran does not possess the capability to handle radioactive contamination at damaged nuclear facilities, claiming that the United States would have to manage recovery of what he described as “nuclear dust.”
The broader conflict escalated after US and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, which prompted Iranian retaliatory attacks targeting Israel and US-aligned Gulf states, alongside the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire was reached on April 8 through mediation involving Pakistan, though subsequent negotiations held in Islamabad did not result in a permanent settlement. The truce was later extended by Trump, without a defined expiration date.
On Sunday, Iran delivered its response to a US peace proposal through Pakistan, but Trump rejected it, describing it as “totally unacceptable.”
