India Successfully Tests Indigenous Glide Weapon System
(MENAFN) India has carried out the first flight test of a domestically developed glide weapon system designed to improve the precision and effectiveness of conventional bombs, according to official statements.
The trial was conducted jointly by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force off the coast of Odisha on Thursday.
The system, known as the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) kit, is intended to convert standard unguided munitions into precision-guided weapons capable of accurately striking ground targets from extended distances.
Developed by Research Center Imarat in Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories, the technology is designed to enhance both the accuracy and destructive capability of relatively low-cost weapon systems.
Officials stated that production of the TARA kits for the Indian Armed Forces has already begun.
The guidance kits are attached to conventional bombs, allowing aircraft to launch strikes from safer stand-off distances while improving targeting precision and reducing risks to pilots and aircraft.
Several countries, including Russia, the United States, China, Pakistan, Israel, and France, operate similar glide or precision-guidance systems in their military arsenals.
Comparable technology has been used extensively by other air forces, including systems designed to transform conventional air-dropped bombs into guided precision weapons capable of long-range targeting, according to reports.
