Former Thai’s PM Leaves Bangkok Prison on Parole

(MENAFN) Thailand’s former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was released on Monday from a prison in Bangkok after being granted parole that allowed him to serve the final four months of his one-year sentence outside detention, according to state media reports.

Footage broadcast by a state-run broadcaster showed Thaksin leaving Klong Prem Central Prison as supporters gathered outside to welcome him. He was seen greeting family members in an emotional reunion, including his daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who is also a former prime minister.

A large number of supporters assembled outside the prison compound under heavy security arrangements. Many wore red clothing, which is widely associated with the Pheu Thai Party, and cheered as Thaksin exited the facility.

Reports indicated that the crowd chanted slogans and waved party flags while he appeared in a white shirt and dark blue trousers, smiling and acknowledging those present as he embraced relatives and supporters.

Earlier, authorities fitted him with an electronic monitoring bracelet as part of the conditions attached to his parole, allowing officials to track his movements during the remainder of his sentence served outside prison.
