Over 300 Foreigners Busted in Jakarta's Massive Gambling Operation
(MENAFN) Indonesian authorities arrested more than 300 foreign nationals Saturday in a sweeping raid targeting an alleged cross-border online gambling syndicate operating out of West Jakarta, media reports confirmed Sunday.
According to media, the operation netted 321 foreign suspects in total, with Vietnamese nationals comprising the single largest group at 228 individuals. The raid was carried out at an office building used as the operation's base.
Brig. Gen. Wira Satya Triputra, director of general crimes at Indonesia's National Criminal Investigation Agency, confirmed the broader breakdown of suspects: 57 Chinese nationals, 13 from Myanmar, 11 from Laos, and additional foreign individuals from other countries.
Wira said early-stage investigations suggest the illicit gambling network had been running for approximately two months before authorities moved in. Officers confiscated an extensive cache of electronic devices and digital infrastructure believed to have underpinned the operation's server management and facilitated financial transactions across international borders.
Investigators are now pursuing a widened probe into suspected ancillary offenses, including immigration violations, money laundering, and transnational cybercrime.
The choice of West Jakarta as a base of operations is consistent with a broader regional pattern — dense urban districts offering dependable high-speed internet connectivity and clusters of high-rise commercial buildings provide ideal cover for international cybercrime networks seeking to embed illicit operations within legitimate business environments.
