Finland Commits to NATO’s USD500M U.S. Arms Initiative for Ukraine

(MENAFN) Finland has committed to NATO’s program for procuring American weapons destined for Ukraine, a Finnish public broadcaster reported Wednesday.

Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen confirmed Helsinki’s participation in NATO’s Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a framework where member countries purchase US-made arms tailored to Ukraine’s military demands.

“We see it as crucial that Ukraine receives critical weapons from the United States,” Hakkanen said during a press briefing in Brussels amid a NATO defense ministers’ meeting.

Each PURL arms shipment carries an estimated value of around $500 million. Hakkanen did not specify Finland’s financial contribution to the initiative.

He stressed the importance of supplying long-range weapons to Ukraine, stating they would produce a “clear impact” on the conflict. Hakkanen also called for expanded military aid from Western nations alongside intensified economic sanctions against Russia.

“It is the only way to achieve peace, if it's what we really want,” he added.

NATO launched the PURL program in July after US President Donald Trump briefly halted military assistance to Ukraine, criticizing allies for not sharing costs sufficiently.

The arrangement involves the US providing the weapons, while European and other allies finance the purchases. By August, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden had collectively allocated $2.2 billion to the initiative.
